New year new hopes

We welcome new year with new hopes and wish to realize those hopes by seemingly plausible new year resolutions. During school days, the first thing asked by my friends after the winter break would be "aur tere new year resolutions kya hain." But to their disappointment, I never had any new year resolutions. I have failed to have any new year resolutions uptill now probably because I fail to understand the importance of New year on whole. Of all the days that we celebrate, 31st December makes least sense to me. Someday probably somebody will show me light and that day I might resolve something which will help me realize my aspirations, till then I am just hopeful.

Some books that I have started to read this new year.

Oliver's story by Eric Segal - Continuing with the story of Oliver and his deceased wife Jenny, well I cannot comment anymore because I am still to reach the last page.

Divide and Quit by Penderel Moon - Story of India's partition, the author has tracked the histroy preety well right from analyzing the cause of partition to its dreaded consequences. Author is a british officer posted at Amritsar during the time of partition.

And I am yet to begin A Random Walk Down Wall Street by Burton G. Malkiel.

It's been a while

It's been a long time since I updated my blog. Diwali break at home, CAT, end semester exams and finally the Btech project presentation. It's been a roller coaster ride marked by several night outs and as always exam times were the best time of the entire semester. Saw several movies, the better ones include:-

My Sassy Girl
A korean flick, and a very cute love story. The high-point of the movie is the weirdo girl. It has a typical hindi movie end but after much twist and turn. Overall, quite a good movie.

The Incredibles
A famliy of superheroes, can u imagine that? High powered action, a pixar film, and a new experiment with superheroes and their treatment by public. A must watch for anime buffs.

Hulchul
Perfect tonic after engineering exams, I know it coz I have experienced it :). Movie fails to make much sense but this is where it scores over other movies ;) If u have had a very tiring day, and have exhausted your mental prowess, nothing better than Hulchul.

Veer Zaara
Yash Chopra has mastered the art of realizing the dream of an average Indian into reel life. A well made movie, but nothing new abt the movie. At times, emotions run too high and u hopelessly stare at the faces of aunties sitting around you, who are probably waiting for you to hand over the handkerchief.

Groundhog Day
1992 movie, and it makes u wonder that why can't such ideas click in 'creme d la creme' of bollywood. It is about a tv reporter who has to relive his day again and again untill he gets rid off his sarcastic attitude and becomes good natured. Must watch !!!

HBD

26th, it was my 21st Happy Butt Day. It would not be appropriate to call it my 'Happy' Birthday, coz I did not receive any gifts, I did not get to eat cake and my parents did not buy me new clothes ;). It was a Happy 'Butt' day, as my butt was at the receiving ends of affectionate torture of people who care for me :P I did not get to eat cake, coz there was nothing left after my facial decorations with the cake.

This was hopefully my last torturous birthday :), but, strangely enuf it doesn't feel good at all. I wonder if I'll ever again cut cake with all my friends beside me, if I'll ever again smoke a vanilla cigar with friends on my birthday, if I'll ever again be able to enjoy the pain of Butt day?

Those were the days

I haven't been able to update my blog lately. Laziness is the reason I guess. Days are passing by at a really fast pace and it won't be long before my days at IIT end. Neways, last two weekends were really good, had a lot of fun with the beach trip and treat at Tian. Check out Aatif's blog to get a glimpse of what our trip was like. The d-day for CAT is closing in and with my Btech Project due on November 16th it is going to be a tough ride from here on.

I wonder if same time next year I would be saying to myself, "Those were the Days". I just hope that I don't have to :)

Here is a verse which most of us would have had felt like sometime during our course of life.

I want to go back to the time when...

Decisions were made by going
"eeny-meeny-miney-mo."

Mistakes were corrected
by simply exclaiming, "do over!"

"Race issue" meant arguing
about who ran the fastest.

Money issues were handled by whoever
was the banker in "Monopoly."

Catching the fireflies could
happily occupy an entire evening.

It wasn't odd to have two
or three "best" friends.

Being old referred to anyone over 20.

The net on a tennis court was the perfect height
to play volleyball and rules didn't matter.

The worst thing you could catch
from the opposite sex was cooties.

It was magic when dad
would "remove" his thumb.

It was unbelievable that dodgeball
wasn't an Olympic event.

Having a weapon in school meant
being caught with a slingshot.

Nobody was prettier than Mom.

Scrapes and bruises
were kissed and made better.

It was a big deal to finally be tall enough
to ride the "big people" rides at the amusement park.

Getting a foot of snow
was a dream come true.

Abilities were discovered because
of a "double-dog-dare."

Saturday morning cartoons weren't
30-minute ads for action figures.

No shopping trip was complete,
unless a new toy was brought home.

Oly-oly-oxen-free"
made perfect sense.

Spinning around, getting dizzy and
falling down was cause for giggles.

The worst embarrassment was being
picked last for a team.

War was a card game.

Water balloons were
the ultimate weapons.

Baseball cards in the spokes transformed
any bike into a motorcycle.

Taking drugs meant
orange-flavored chewable aspirin.

Ice cream was considered
a basic food group.

Older siblings were the worst tormentors,
but also the fiercest protectors.

I so damn want to go back to Those Days :)

The Coffe Cup !!!

Long but really good :)

The Coffee Cup

A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly, he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jarand proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar wasfull. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. Heshook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golfballs. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “yes.” The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured theentire contents into the jar, effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now,” said the professor, as the laughter subsided, “I wantyou to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things—your family, your children, your health, your friends, and your favorite passions—things that if everything else was lost andonly they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house, and your car. The sand is everything else—the small stuff.” “If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for thepebbles or the golf balls.

The same goes for life. If you spend all your time andenergy on the small stuff, you will never have room for things that are importantto you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play withyour children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your partner out to dinner. Play another 18 holes. There will always be time to clean the house, and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first, the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest isjust sand.”

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. “I’m glad you asked,” he said. “It just goes to show you thatno matter how full your life may seem, there’s always room for a cup of coffee with a friend.”

Read on

I received this forward recently. Really good, read on!

THE COFFIN

A pretty woman was serving a life sentence in prison. Angry and resentful about her situation, she had decided that she would rather die than to live another year in prison. Over the years she had become good friends with one of the prison caretakers. His job, among others, was to bury those prisoners who died in a graveyard just outside the prison walls. When a prisoner died, the caretaker rang a bell, which was heard by everyone. The caretaker then got the body and put it in a casket. Next, he entered his office to fill out the death certificate before returning to the casket to nail the lid shut. Finally, he put the casket on a wagon to take it to the graveyard and bury it.

Knowing this routine, the woman devised an escape plan andshared it with the caretaker. The next time the bell rang, the woman would leave her cell and sneak into the dark room where the coffins were kept. She would slip into the coffin with the dead body while the caretaker was filling out the death certificate. When the care-taker returned, he would nail the lid shut and take the coffin outside the prison with the woman in the coffin along with the dead body. He would then bury the coffin. The woman knew there would be enough air for her to breathe until later in the evening when the caretaker would return to the graveyard under the cover of darkness, dig up the coffin, open it, and set her free. The caretaker was reluctant to go along with this plan, but since he and the woman had become good friends over the years, he agreed to do it.

The woman waited several weeks before some-one in the prison died. She was asleep in her cell when she heard the death bell ring. She got up, picked the lock of her cell, and slowly walked down the hallway. She was nearly caught a couple of times. Her heart was beating fast. She opened the door to the darkened room where the coffins were kept. Quietly in the dark, she found the coffin that containedthe dead body, carefully climbed into the coffin and pulled the lid shut to wait for the caretaker to come and nail the lid shut. Soon she heard footsteps and the pounding of the hammer and nails. Even though she was very uncomfortable in the coffin with the dead body, she knew that with each nail she was one step closer to freedom. The coffin was lifted onto the wagon and taken outside to the graveyard. She could feel the coffin being lowered into the ground. She didn't make a sound as the coffin hit the bottom of the grave with a thud. Finally she heard the dirt dropping onto the top of the wooden coffin, and she knew that it was only a matter of time until she would be free at last. After several minutes of absolute silence, she began to laugh. She was free! She was free! Feeling curious, she decided to light a match to find out the identityof the dead prisoner beside her. To her horror, she discovered that she was lying next to the dead caretaker. Many people believe they have life all figured out..... but sometimes it just doesn't turn out the way they planned it.
